I’m sitting in my friend’s apartment on this chilly Wednesday afternoon researching my new future home online. What home is that, you ask? Why, it’s Seoul, Korea. I recently decided to move to South Korea to teach english to little kiddies. The road that led to this decision was fun, exciting, tumultous and quite scary to be honest. I’ve lived in Los Angeles for the past 6 and a half years and I had no real intentions of abandoning the city that I love until all the doors started to close for me here.
Like half of LA, I moved here with gargantuan dreams of making it as a producer/screenwriter which would eventually lead to my Oscar acceptance speech in 20__! Of course in my Pollyanna head, I can write from anywhere in the world and still break into this industry. At least that’s what I tell myself.
While I pursued my dreams, I had to hold the fort down with 9-5 jobs but last year I lost my job and couldn’t land another one. At first I collected unemployment but that soon ran out. Then, I sporadically worked at different temp gigs but my bills were barely getting paid. Then, my parents started to help me out financially which makes any person over 25 feel like shite.
So, on a whim I applied to teach english in Seoul 3 weeks ago and I got a callback within 24 hours. Which was way faster than all of the temp agencies I registered with in the past 8 months. I had to literally stalk these temp agencies on a daily basis! Oh, the irony of it all. I am tired of struggling in the land of opportunity and decided to try my luck in the land of the morning calm. I always wanted to live in Asia when I was in college but didn’t think I would have a chance to do so. As soon as they offered me the position, I didn’t hesitate with signing the contract but soon after, I was in a wee state of shock. Now, that I have had a few weeks to process it all, I am getting really pumped and psyched about my new adventure.
This blog will serve as a place for me to record all of my crazy exciting encounters in Seoul and much to my friend’s surprise, there will be many pictures to accompany the stories. Ya’ll know how much I love the camera. Wish me luck!!
